Our Washington heights workspaces are located at Shamah Properties’ apartment building at 535-539 162nd St. The artists of this program give monthly demonstrations and teach classes to the residents of the building in exchange for their workspace. Chashama provides access to Materials for the Arts (MFTA) and a limited budget to the artists to acquire materials for the classes.
Our current resident artists, Mengly Hernandez, Adalky Capellán, and Merelis Ortiz & Ysanet Batista of Woke Foods all have long standing ties to the neighborhood. Through engaging, bi-lingual (Sp/En) workshops the residents will have the opportunity to experience a variety of visual arts, sculpture and culinary classes. These studios are best suited to visual artists. They have tile floors, sheet rock walls, windows, and access to a bathroom. The space does not have a slop sink and is not ideal for painters.
