Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a type of gentle massage intended to encourage natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissues back toward the heart.

Who Can Benefit from MLD?

Lymph massage with a SPEAR Massage Therapist can benefit just about everyone. If you’re feeling fatigued or lacking energy, or if you’ve been sick and your body is fighting to get your immunity back on track, Manual Lymphatic Drainage would serve you well. MLD is also particularly useful for the following:

  • General relaxation
  • System detoxification
  • Pre and post surgery
  • To reduce edema caused by cancer treatment, pregnancy, etc.
  • Sports injuries
  • Arthritis, bursitis and tendonitis
  • Chronic head and neck tension
  • Migraines
  • Autoimmune conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and more

What are the Benefits of MLD for Cancer Treatment?

Encouraged by positive results in treating cancer-related edemas, our MLD patients often come to us via their oncologists or plastic surgeons. Our MLD certified therapists commonly use MLD before surgery to promote faster healing and after surgery to reduce swelling.

How Does MLD Work?

MLD is a non-invasive manual technique that can have a powerful effect on the body. During this treatment, the skin is stretched in a way that encourages lymph flow, moving fluid from your swollen areas into a place where the lymphatic system is working normally.

Very different from traditional forms of massage that rely on deep and rigorous rubbing, MLD is extremely gentle and should feel as if the skin is being brushed, not rubbed or kneaded. If performed correctly with the correct pressure, direction and speed, this low intensity treatment can greatly enhance recovery and facilitate drainage.

What does MLD Treatment Cost at SPEAR?

MLD can be billed through insurance.

It is also offered as a self-pay treatment:

$60/30 minutes

$120/60 minutes
